Organization Overview

Employ to Empower (ETE) supports residents in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) community by providing access to development and entrepreneurial resources. Our resources include affordable microloans and business mentorship, with the goal of having a long-term impact on our members’ personal and economic well-being. We also actively advocate for creating positive social change in the DTES.

We’re keen to build a group of compassionate and talented Advisors to provide mentorship to the organization. Key areas of support include: Fundraising, Business Development Program Evaluation, Human Resources and Leadership.

Position Description

Title Description: Advisor
Reporting To: Christina Wong, Executive Director
Location: Virtual
Desired Start Date: July 2020 (Minimum 1-year commitment)
Commitment: Up to 5 hours per month
Position Type: Volunteer

Position Summary

Your primary roles include sharing insights to ETE’s staff, volunteers, contractors, and Board of Directors regarding anything related to Business Development, Fundraising, Program Evaluation, Human Resources, and Leadership. This role includes introducing your network to help further grow the cause to the greater community.

Key Accountabilities

  • [Fundraising]: Assist with fundraising by sharing ETE’s new initiatives with their personal network
  • [Business Development]: Help connect us and grow our network by sharing important business contacts
  • [Program Evaluation]: Creating practical systems that capture the effectiveness of a program for the staff and Board of Directors
  • [Human Resources]: Provide advisory and insights to the Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • [Leadership]: Support our team with valuable lessons about scaling, partnerships, and strategy

Qualifications

  • Compassionate and cares deeply for the DTES community
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high relational empathy
  • 2+ years of experience volunteering/working in the DTES
  • Diligent problem solver, who is looking to learn and help when possible
  • Keen desire to be a part of something great that positively impacts society especially in times of crisis
  • You are proactive to collaborate remotely

Desired Attributes

  • Experience advising high-growth, ambitious start-ups and initiatives
  • Entrepreneurship experience
  • Hands-on experience advising in a specialty area (fundraising, two-sided platforms, social project)

Education

  • Must be enrolled in post-secondary education and have completed, or be in the process of completing, a Business degree related to Marketing, Psychology, and Finance
