Employ to Empower (ETE) empowers residents accessing services in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) community by providing access to development and entrepreneurial resources. Our resources include affordable micro-loans and business mentorship, with the goal of having a long-term impact on our members’ personal and economic well-being. We also actively advocate for creating positive social change in the DTES.

We’re keen to build a group of compassionate and talented mentors to support our entrepreneurs in our program who specialize in web development, social media growth, finance, go-to market, digital marketing, graphic design, accounting, and legal advice. We want to bring a community of supporters to residents in the DTES.

Position Description

Title Description: Specialist Mentor
Reporting To: Robert Jago, Mentorship Lead
Location: Virtual and or in-person
Desired Start Date: Ongoing
Commitment: 3-4 hours per month.
Position Type: Volunteer

Position Summary

Your primary roles include supporting entrepreneurs including but not limited to: Digital marketing, finances, marketing, websites, and graphic design. Specialist mentors will open office hours for 3-4 hours per month for emerging entrepreneurs in the Downtown Eastside community.

Key Accountabilities

[Digital Marketing]: Support entrepreneurs to get their Instagram and Facebook profiles / business pages set up / help with copywriting
[Finances]: Support entrepreneurs with finding their costs, and strategy for their micro-business
[Marketing]: Provide hands on support and advice on where the entrepreneur can further market their product
[Web Developer]: Create and maintain a website/e-commerce platform for entrepreneurs throughout the year
[Graphic Designers]: Create graphics for the entrepreneurs to use for their social media platforms
[Accounting]: Share knowledge and steps to registering for sole proprietorships, partnerships, and incorporations
[Insurance]: Share insights/expertise on certain types of business insurance that one needs to get access to
[Legal]: Provide insights and advice on patents and legal documents for sole proprietorship and partnerships

Qualifications

-Compassionate and cares deeply for the DTES community
-Strong interpersonal skills and high relational empathy
-2+ years of experience volunteering/working in the DTES
-Clear, concise, and detail-oriented in terms of email, phone, and text communication
-Diligent problem solver, who is looking to learn and help when possible
-Keen desire to be a part of something great that positively impacts society especially in times of crisis
-Proactive to collaborate remotely

Desired Attributes

-Experience advising high-growth, ambitious start-ups and initiatives
-Entrepreneurship experience
-Hands-on experience advising in a specialty area (fundraising, two-sided platforms, social project)

Education

Must be enrolled in post-secondary education and have completed, or be in the process of completing, a degree related to Business, Finance, Accounting, Law, Marketing and/or Interactive Arts/Technology
